Story details

Syria’s General Organization for Seed Multiplication plans to produce 25,000 laboratory-grown potato plantlets for the 2027 agricultural season, according to an October 22 report by state news agency SANA. Tissue-culture director Douriya Jammo described a target for future production, rather than an already delivered volume.

The programme starts with shoot-tip meristem culture and virus testing. Plantlets then pass through greenhouses, insect-screen houses and open fields to multiply seed potatoes. Jammo said the chain depends on quality controls at each stage; laboratory plantlets and harvested seed tonnage are different measures.

She identified shortages of trained staff, electricity interruptions and comparatively high laboratory-production costs as constraints. According to her account, returning technical staff, improved electricity supply and standby generators have helped maintain operations. These are the organisation’s assessments, not an independent audit of production quality or capacity.
