Story details

Syria’s Latakia container terminal has received six hybrid rubber-tyred gantry cranes as part of an equipment upgrade with CMA CGM, state news agency SANA reported on October 22. Latakia International Container Terminal director Faisal Hweilo identified the equipment as E-RTG cranes, replacing reliance on straddle carriers for yard operations.

Port director Abdulhamid al-Wahab said the cranes would support vertical container stacking and better use of available yard space. He expects improved handling and shorter vessel stays. The report does not provide measured before-and-after handling rates, so these gains remain management expectations.

Hweilo said completion of the first development phase was expected within the following two months, alongside work on a second phase involving marine geotechnical studies of soil conditions and water depths. The account reports delivered equipment and planned next steps; it does not establish that either development phase has been completed or quantify the project’s cost.
