Syria has granted 33 patents since the start of 2026, patent-department head Nisreen Aql told state news agency SANA in an interview published on October 22. She said the grants covered fields including dentistry, machinery, mechanical engineering, physics, nanomaterials and civil engineering. The total is an official’s account, not a separately audited register.

Aql described an examination process that checks formal and legal requirements before assessing novelty, inventive step and industrial applicability against domestic and international information. She said patent protection lasts 20 years, compared with 10 years for utility models intended for simpler technological innovations.

The distinction matters for inventors seeking to commercialise their work: Aql said a patent allows its owner to prevent unauthorised use of the invention but does not replace regulatory approvals required to sell the product. She also described free assistance with preparing applications. Her interview explains the office’s procedures; it does not announce a new patent law or guarantee approval for an individual application.
