Story details

Chile’s National Statistics Institute (INE) reported 1,696,082 overnight stays at tourist accommodation establishments in August 2026, according to the Monthly Survey of Tourist Accommodation (EMAT) bulletin released on 1 October. That was 0.7% fewer than in August 2025. An overnight stay is one passenger’s night at an accommodation establishment; it is not the same measure as the number of arrivals. Arrivals in August totalled 798,946, down 1.8% year over year. Average length of stay was 2.12 nights, a measure of the relationship between arrivals and overnight stays in the survey, not a visitor’s full travel history or total accommodation use across trips.

Hotels and apart-hotels recorded 1,333,264 overnight stays, the larger share of the total, and increased 1.1% from a year earlier. The “Other” category includes hostels, inns, residences, cabins and similar establishments; it recorded 362,819 nights, down 6.9%. Arrivals also differed by class: hotels and apart-hotels received 650,503 arrivals, up 0.5%, while other establishments recorded 148,443, down 10.7%. An overnight-stay count can include several nights from the same establishment or trip, so 1,696,082 nights does not mean 1,696,082 distinct passengers. Arrivals and overnight stays answer different questions about activity in the accommodation sector.

The national room occupancy rate was 39.6%, an increase of 0.21 percentage points from the same month a year earlier. A percentage-point change is the difference between two occupancy rates; it is not the same as a 0.21% proportional rise. Occupancy reached 51.8% in hotels and apart-hotels, up 0.26 point, while it fell to 19.9% in other establishments, down 0.34 point. Bed occupancy is a separate measure: 25.1% nationally, up 0.19 point; 37.2% for hotels, up 0.64 point; and 11.5% for other establishments, down 0.56 point. Room occupancy is based on available rooms and bed occupancy on available bed places. The two rates describe different capacity measures and should not be substituted for each other.

Regional activity varied considerably. Santiago’s Metropolitan Region recorded the most overnight stays, 752,128, up 4.9% year over year. Valparaíso was second with 166,999 nights, although that was a 3.3% decline. Antofagasta recorded 142,982 nights, up 0.7%, while Los Lagos registered 115,182, down 5.6%. The lowest total was Aysén’s 13,924, a 2.7% decline. The direction also differed elsewhere: overnight stays fell 43.2% in Arica y Parinacota but rose 8.2% in Atacama, 7.4% in Biobío and 13.1% in La Araucanía. One national rate therefore does not imply that accommodation activity moved in the same direction in every region.

The Metropolitan Region had the highest room occupancy, 76.4%, followed by Antofagasta at 51.7%. Tarapacá reached 41.4%, with a 3.53-point annual increase; Los Ríos recorded 28.1%, up 3.28 points. The largest declines were 13.97 points in Arica y Parinacota and 4.48 points in La Araucanía. RevPAR measures average revenue per available room: the national figure was CLP 35,534 in current pesos, up 2.1% year over year. The Metropolitan Region led at CLP 77,253, up 5.1%; Ñuble recorded CLP 53,789, a 16.7% rise. RevPAR fell 35.7% in Magallanes and 31.2% in Arica y Parinacota.

ADR is the estimated average daily rate for an occupied accommodation unit; RevPAR tracks revenue per available room. National ADR was CLP 89,828 in August, up 1.6% from a year earlier. The highest regional ADR values were CLP 175,988 in Ñuble and CLP 135,100 in Valparaíso; their annual changes were a 28.5% increase and a 0.9% decrease, respectively. In the Metropolitan Region, ADR was CLP 101,071, up 1.0%. These monetary comparisons are reported in current Chilean pesos, not inflation-adjusted real amounts or converted foreign currency. ADR and RevPAR changes are percentages comparing price periods; unlike occupancy, they are not expressed in percentage points.

EMAT is a monthly survey of formal tourist accommodation establishments, designed to estimate activity nationally, by region and by tourist destination. Its technical note says the sample is fixed and was updated in 2014 and 2017; the August 2026 sample included establishments operating during the year-round and snow seasons. The objective-active sample comprised 1,134 establishments, of which 1,042 were achieved, a 91.9% operational achievement rate. The national overnight-stay estimate had a 5.0% coefficient of variation and a confidence interval of 1,530,704–1,861,461. The bulletin marks August observations provisional and the note recommends consulting variability measures. Destination and passenger-residence breakdowns do not meet the minimum quality standard for publication. Results should therefore be read with the survey’s coverage and uncertainty in mind.
