Story details

The White House issued an executive order on October 5 directing a review of temporary relief for diesel-fuel taxes. Within five days, the Treasury Secretary must determine whether relief is authorized, whether a qualifying event occurred and which taxpayers were affected. If those conditions are met, payment of specified diesel excise taxes incurred from October 5 through December 31 may be deferred.

The order says deferred amounts should carry no penalties or interest to the extent allowed by law, and directs the IRS not to impose certain penalties involving dyed diesel sold or used on highways during the same period. This is not an automatic, universal tax waiver: coverage depends on Treasury’s legal determination and subsequent guidance.
