Story details

Statistics Indonesia (BPS) reported that Indonesia’s national General Wholesale Price Index (IHPB) was 6.76% higher in September 2026 than a year earlier. The release, published on 1 October, compares the index with September 2025. It also put the month-on-month increase at 0.62% and the year-to-date rise at 5.73%. The annual, monthly and year-to-date rates cover different periods; 6.76% should not be read as the increase during September alone. This series tracks prices at the wholesale trade level and is not the Consumer Price Index.

The largest annual increase cited in the release was 14.61% in the section named “Iron Ore and Minerals; Electricity, Gas and Water.” That is a section-level rate, not inflation across every sector or the increase in the general index. BPS also said the Construction/Building group IHPB rose 9.63% year on year in September. The agency cited higher prices for asphalt, reinforcing steel, cement, crushed stone and sand among the items associated with movement in that group. These section rates should be kept distinct from the 6.76% annual increase in the national General IHPB.

Some products linked with the annual rise were industrial diesel, unsubsidized LPG, ordinary rice, lubricating oil and transport diesel. The release lists these as examples of products with year-on-year increases; its summary does not quantify each product’s contribution to the overall index or describe changes in consumer retail prices. IHPB measures price changes for commodities traded at wholesale level in Indonesia or its regions. The bulletin is therefore not a retail price list, but a statistical release about index movements calculated from wholesale price quotations.

BPS’s 2025 publication says the IHPB has used a 2023=100 base since 2025 and covers 781 commodities; the basket draws on the 2023 provincial wholesale-price weighting survey. The current classification comprises five sections and differs from the earlier classification. This current base and basket matter when interpreting September 2026 comparisons. The headline annual, monthly and year-to-date changes are period rates from the same base-year series. Setting the base year to 100 does not mean prices have risen only 6.76% since 2023; 6.76% is the annual change between September 2025 and September 2026.

A wholesale price index should not be confused with consumer inflation, which tracks a household consumption basket; producer prices, which track prices received at the factory gate; or foreign-trade price measures. BPS methodology describes monthly wholesale-price collection from wholesalers in the provinces and calculation using a weighted Laspeyres formula. The September IHPB therefore aggregates product and trade weights; it does not show that every business faced the same percentage change in its purchase costs. The comparison period, wholesale level and classification coverage all matter when interpreting the three national rates in the release.
