Story details
Estimates published by Statistics Indonesia (BPS) on 1 October 2026 put Indonesia’s paddy harvested area at 1.08 million hectares in August, 30,000 hectares or 2.83% below the 1.11 million hectares recorded in August 2025. BPS reports production at different moisture and processing stages: dry harvested paddy (GKP) was estimated at 6.52 million tonnes, dry milled paddy (GKG) at 5.46 million tonnes and rice for human food consumption at 3.15 million tonnes. These tonnages refer to different product stages and should not be treated as equivalent measures.
GKP production was down 210,000 tonnes, or 3.15%, from 6.73 million tonnes a year earlier. GKG fell 170,000 tonnes, or 2.94%, from 5.63 million tonnes. Rice for food consumption declined by 90,000 tonnes, or 2.90%, from 3.24 million tonnes. The comparisons follow the changes reported by BPS rather than calculations from rounded million-tonne displays. GKG is paddy at a drier, milling-ready stage than GKP; the rice figure represents the amount estimated for consumption after applying paddy-to-rice conversion.
The 2.83% annual decline in harvested area and the percentage changes in paddy and rice production are separate indicators. They do not, by themselves, establish a change in yield: production has to be considered with harvested area and output per hectare, and conversions between product stages also apply. BPS’s summary compares August 2026 with August 2025; it does not, on its own, establish the role of weather, farm-gate prices, stocks or adequacy of supply. These are national estimates of harvested area and production for the monthly reference period.
Since 2018, BPS has used an Area Sampling Frame survey, known by its Indonesian name Kerangka Sampel Area (KSA), to estimate paddy harvested area. The agency describes a method based on objective measurement and high-resolution satellite imagery, with field observations during the last seven days of each month. The national KSA survey is implemented through inter-agency collaboration. BPS says the observations can also describe other paddy field conditions, including crop growth phases and fallow land. This does not mean that the full harvest from every individual field is directly weighed to produce the national area estimate.
Production estimates combine area and yield information. BPS methodology notes explain that yield is measured through crop-cutting observations and that national conversion factors are applied to convert GKP to GKG and paddy to rice. The rice-production estimate is therefore not simply the GKG tonnage taken from fields; it is an estimate of the converted food product. The bulletin released in October presents estimated values for August, which may be revised as information is updated. Harvested area, GKP, GKG and rice tonnages should be read as separate measures; the differences between them should not be interpreted as losses or inventory changes.
Keeping these categories separate also prevents combining harvested area, the different paddy stages and food rice into one inventory series.
