Story details

Canada has launched consultations on a comprehensive space act and released its first PNT Resilience Framework, according to a 22 October announcement by Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada. The ministry said the initiatives were introduced during the week at SpaceBound 2026; it did not specify the launch day.

The proposed law would modernize regulation of Canadian activities in outer space. Consultation is a step toward legislation, rather than confirmation that a new comprehensive act has taken effect. The government says the initiative builds on the Canadian Space Launch Act introduced in 2026.

The PNT Resilience Framework focuses on diversifying space- and ground-based sources, developing Canadian technologies usable for civilian and defence needs, encouraging investment and improving preparedness. Positioning, navigation and timing support services ranging from payments to emergency dispatch and electricity networks.

The ministry put the space sector’s 2024 economic contribution at CAD 3.8 billion and employment supported at more than 28,000. Those historical figures describe the industry’s scale; they are not estimates of jobs or revenue generated by the newly announced measures.
