Story details

The Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority (SEWA) said on 30 September 2026 that it had completed and commissioned a main 33-kilovolt distribution station in Khorfakkan. Emirates News Agency (WAM) reported that the facility has a total capacity of 60 megavolt-amperes (MVA) and cost AED35 million. SEWA said it would mainly serve Khorfakkan Resort and also support surrounding urban areas. WAM added that the station is intended to serve some future projects in the area, but the report did not identify those projects or quantify their expected demand.

The facility is distribution infrastructure at the 33 kV voltage level. The 60 MVA figure describes apparent-power capacity in an electrical system; it is not an electricity-generation output or a megawatt-hour quantity delivered over a specified period. The station should therefore not be described as a new power plant generating 60 megawatts. A distribution station forms part of the infrastructure that transfers electricity through the network to facilities and users. The report did not explain the station’s upstream grid connections, redundancy arrangements or the amount by which it increases available distribution capacity. Without those details, the capacity figure cannot be converted directly into annual energy supply.

Saud Abdulaziz, director of SEWA’s Khorfakkan Department, said the project was planned to keep pace with the city’s tourism and urban development and was implemented under approved technical standards. The authority described it as a strategic infrastructure investment intended to support reliable supply and network readiness. WAM did not quantify the station’s actual load, demand at commissioning, number of connections or effect on outage frequency. The reported AED35 million is the total project cost; the source does not provide enough information to calculate a cost per customer or a comparable unit investment measure. It also did not report the financing structure or construction period.

The completed station is expected to support Khorfakkan Resort’s operating readiness and electricity infrastructure for nearby users. The reference to future projects does not mean those projects are already complete or that the station’s full capacity is already being used. Similarly, a stated aim of improving supply reliability is not a measured operating result. Assessing the project’s effect would require later indicators such as demand served, electricity flows, interruption duration and network reliability after commissioning. The announcement provides capacity and investment information, but no before-and-after performance comparison and no estimate of the share of local electricity demand that will be connected to the new facility.
