Story details
Türkiye’s Agriculture and Forestry Ministry published its state-supported agricultural insurance statistics for the first half of 2026 on 24 September. A total of 1,983,541 policies were issued between January and June. Their combined insured value reached TL1,043,630,703,848, while government premium support totalled TL22,740,678,360. The policy count was 3.1% lower than the 2,046,010 policies recorded in the same period of 2025. Crop insurance represented 84.9% of policies, followed by cattle life cover at 11.5% and small-ruminant life cover at 2.4%. The composition by policy count differed from the distribution of insured value: cattle life insurance accounted for 43.0% of the total insured value, compared with 36.4% for crop insurance. The distinction matters because the number of contracts alone does not show how much value is insured in each line. The figures cover policies recorded in the ministry’s state-supported programme during the six-month reference period.
The programme covered 23,273,089 decares of open-field crop production and 60,187 decares of greenhouse area. Livestock life policies covered 5,148,897 cattle and 10,636,540 small ruminants. The ministry reported TL5,358,766,199 in claims paid across all lines, including TL1,835,531,645 for crop production and TL3,523,234,554 for animal production. Flooding and water inundation represented 51.8% of crop claims; hail accounted for 24%. Wheat was the leading crop by claims paid, with 45.2% of the reported crop-payment total. The year-on-year comparison also showed a 46.9% decline in land covered by drought-yield insurance and a 16.4% increase in greenhouse insurance area. These are programme records for January–June, not a measure of all agricultural damage in Türkiye or of losses among producers without insurance. The report presents claims under state-supported policies and should be interpreted within that scope.
