Story details

The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification issued a new food insecurity and malnutrition alert for Sudan on 12 October, according to the World Health Organization. It warned of growing famine risk in parts of Greater Darfur and Greater Kordofan. Conflict, mass displacement, drought and inadequate humanitarian funding are combining to weaken access to food and livelihoods.

The related IPC assessment describes poorer harvest prospects as rainfall fails and cereal prices rise. WHO called for safe, sustained aid access, especially in North and West Kordofan, and protection of food, water and health systems. The announcement is a warning of rising risk; it does not declare a new, definitive famine classification for all these areas. It supplies no quantified harvest forecast or current market-price series.
