Story details

An independent review of Scotland’s maternity services began on 5 October. Chaired by Professor Christine McCourt of City St George’s, University of London, it will consider data, evidence and the experiences of women, families and health workers. It will give particular attention to rural and island communities, including services in Caithness, Elgin and Wigtownshire.

The review will also examine differences in outcomes, including higher maternal mortality rates among Black and Asian women. It is due to run for nine months, with findings and recommendations expected in July 2027. Healthcare Improvement Scotland is separately conducting unannounced inspections at all 18 acute maternity units; the review will take those inspections into account. These are ongoing assessments, not completed inspection findings.
