Story details

Saudi Arabia’s railways carried more than 40.9 million passengers from July through September 2026, according to quarterly indicators from the Transport General Authority (TGA), reported by the Saudi Press Agency on 20 October. Rail freight was reported at 3.9 million tonnes, alongside 46,300 containers. TGA said passenger numbers rose from the same period a year earlier but did not provide a growth rate in the announcement.

Urban rail carried 38.3 million passengers: 30.4 million on Riyadh Metro, seven million on the automated train at King Abdulaziz International Airport and about 911,200 on the Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University line. Intercity services recorded more than 2.5 million passenger journeys, including over 1.9 million on the Haramain High Speed Railway, about 393,900 on Saudi Arabia Railways’ Eastern Network and 258,600 on its Northern Network. These are quarterly journey counts, not unique people; rounded component figures may not sum exactly to the reported totals.
