Story details

Nigeria is working to operationalise a national taxonomy that would define which adaptation and resilience activities can qualify for climate finance, including projects serving smallholder farmers affected by drought and floods. The Presidential Implementation Committee on Technology Transfer discussed an implementation framework at a validation workshop in Abuja, according to a Voice of Nigeria report published on 21 October. The Finance Ministry and UN Development Programme are developing the taxonomy.

Participants described possible instruments such as index-based insurance and blended finance, while noting that northern and southern farming areas face different climate risks. A YAPU Solutions representative discussed a potential $100 million–$200 million pilot and a longer-term annual opportunity estimate of up to $30 billion, but explicitly said these were targets, not funding commitments. The committee chairman said financing had not yet been assessed, so the work remains at the framework-development stage.
