Story details

Livestock Development Minister Idi Mukhtar Maiha said an implementation framework for Nigeria’s National Feed and Fodder Policy had been developed at a three-day stakeholder workshop in Abuja on 19 October. The workshop aims to define strategic alignment, institutional responsibilities, resource mobilisation, and monitoring and evaluation. Maiha said feed and fodder account for about 70% of livestock production costs.

The ministry says dry-season shortages of feed and water constrain production and can intensify competition over natural resources. The framework considers using rice straw and other crop residues, expanding fodder cultivation, and strengthening seed supply and storage. The Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) project said all 29 participating states would incorporate the policy framework into annual work plans and that it plans to develop 500 hectares of pastureland for herders in selected states.
