Story details
Nigeria’s Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, said early procurement had secured fertilizer supply for the 2026 season and generated ₦61.58 billion in savings. He made the disclosure at the CAADP Community of Practice meeting in Maiduguri on October 5, where federal and state officials, non-state actors and development partners discussed implementation of the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme’s Kampala Declaration for 2026–2035.
Kyari said Nigeria remained on course to deliver a 1.1 million-metric-tonne fertilizer programme this year. The meeting also considered how to align federal and state plans and budgets with the country’s ten-year agrifood strategy and shared progress indicators. The minister said an agricultural mechanisation policy unveiled in August includes plans for a tractor assembly plant with annual capacity of 2,000 to 4,000 units; he did not say that the plant had begun operating.
