Story details

Mexico’s administrative register for light vehicles counted 129,288 units sold in September 2026, an 8% increase from the same month in 2025. INEGI published the preliminary release on 2 October. The figure describes retail sales in the domestic market during the month; it is not vehicle production, exports, cumulative registrations or sales of heavy vehicles.

Vehicles sold from January through September totalled 1,144,002, 5% above the same period a year earlier. The month’s annual comparison and the year-to-date comparison cover different windows: one sets September against September, while the other compares nine complete months with January–September 2025. The 8% monthly gain therefore should not be applied to the whole year or treated as a future pace.

The RAIAVL compiles administrative information supplied by participating industry companies. Its purpose is to provide an advance count of retail sales of light vehicles in Mexico’s domestic market. The statistic records transactions reported by covered firms; it is not a survey of purchase intentions or a census of all vehicles on the road. A rise in sales alone does not identify which models, regions, prices or financing conditions drove the change.

INEGI’s short release highlights the monthly total and year-to-date figure, and points readers to the full bulletin for detail. The totals therefore do not establish that every manufacturer sold more, that domestic manufacturing increased or that all segments performed alike. Domestic sales can include vehicles built in Mexico and imported units; the headline aggregate does not separate those origins.

The year-on-year comparison helps limit seasonal differences between months, but it is not a seasonally adjusted month-to-month series and does not show the adjusted path of sales. Nor does a unit count automatically measure spending, since it contains no monetary value or average price. The increase in sales volume is an administrative result, not an estimate of the contribution to gross domestic product.

For businesses and readers following the sector, the release provides a national reference for retail demand for new light vehicles, with the caveat that the advance may be revised when the complete report is issued. The publication date, 2 October, should remain distinct from the observed period, September. INEGI’s announced calendar placed the next advance, for October, on 4 November 2026.

The available balance is specific: September recorded 129,288 units and 8% annual growth; the first nine months reached 1,144,002, up 5% from 2025. Both rates describe retail sales of light vehicles in Mexico. They are not a year-end forecast, sufficient evidence about manufacturers’ revenue or proof of an equivalent shift in production, employment or foreign trade.
