Story details

Mali’s Press and Publicity Agency (AMAP) reported from Yirimadio market in Bamako on October 4, where traders quoted watermelon wholesale prices of FCFA 850, 1,250 and 1,500 depending on size and quality. Producer Makan Traoré cited scarce rainfall and access to farm inputs among this year’s production constraints and said a bag of fertiliser cost him more than FCFA 35,000.

Producer Yacouba Wari said a 10-tonne truck trip from Baraouéli to Bamako had risen from FCFA 100,000–150,000 to FCFA 400,000–500,000. Wholesaler Aboubacar Doumbia described spoilage when fruit sits in the sun, saying some shipments had to be removed before sale. AMAP’s report provides market quotations and trader accounts but no total production, loss rate or market-wide sales volume.
