King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center said on October 5 that it had removed a rare tumor extending from the uterus through major veins into the heart in a single operation. The hospital said imaging showed that the tumor had reached the inferior vena cava and right atrium in a patient in her forties.
According to the hospital, teams from cardiac surgery, gynecologic oncology, hepatopancreatobiliary surgery, anesthesia and intensive care planned the procedure together. The operation lasted more than 16 hours; surgeons removed the tumor and its uterine source, then reconstructed affected parts of the heart wall and blood vessels.
