Story details

UNICEF Iraq called for stronger mental-health support for children and adolescents on September 10, World Suicide Prevention Day. The 2025 Government Global School-based Student Health Survey cited in its statement found that 21.4% of students aged 13–17 had seriously considered suicide and 19.1% had attempted it during the previous 12 months.

These percentages refer to the student group covered by that survey and its stated period; they are not a national prevalence estimate for all Iraqi children or a mortality rate. UNICEF called for stronger support through schools and health centres and more prevention and early help. The statement focuses on services and policy, not personal clinical advice.
