Story details
Egypt’s General Authority for Investment and Free Zones (GAFI) said its leaders held several meetings with companies and institutions on the sidelines of the inaugural Alamein–Africa Business Forum. Chief Executive Mohamed Awad and deputy chief executive Walid Anwar discussed cooperation and investment opportunities with representatives of Algeria’s Investment Promotion Agency, India’s Motherson, the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) and Italy’s export credit agency, SACE. The authority’s account groups the meetings in one release; it reports discussions and areas of possible cooperation, not signed projects, committed finance or investment values.
Awad met Omar Rekkache, director general of Algeria’s Investment Promotion Agency, to discuss stronger investment and trade cooperation between Egypt and Algeria, potential joint projects and expansion into African markets. GAFI also met a Motherson delegation. The Indian company works in automotive and aircraft components, and the discussion concerned possible Egyptian manufacturing opportunities in those fields. Motherson’s head of new business development, Gautam Manga, said the company was interested in studying opportunities in Egypt. GAFI said it would support the company as it explored the market. The release does not say Motherson selected a site, approved an investment or agreed a timetable.
Anwar reviewed Egypt’s investment frameworks and their associated incentives, with particular attention to the free-zones framework for businesses targeting foreign markets. Separately, Awad joined Investment and Foreign Trade Minister Mohamed Farid Saleh in a meeting with Afreximbank executive vice-president Haythem El-Maayergi. They discussed support for startups and small and medium-sized enterprises and ways to widen Egyptian companies’ access to African markets. Saleh and Awad also met SACE regional head Ciro Aquino; the stated subjects were investment, trade, infrastructure, environmental sustainability and technological innovation. No facility, guarantee or transaction was announced. The release therefore records a set of exploratory contacts across investment promotion, manufacturing and finance, while leaving any future company decisions or institutional agreements open.
