Story details

Catalonia opened applications for small-scale fishing businesses in the south of the region to compensate for losses caused by interactions with bottlenose dolphins during 2024. Applications run from 20 October to 19 November; eligible vessel owners must be active in the fleet register and based at the ports of Torredembarra, Cambrils or L’Ametlla de Mar.

Aid is calculated using days spent fishing for the eligible species and the share of fishing days on which dolphins visited nets, with crew size also affecting the payment. For boats fishing more than 150 days and experiencing dolphin visits on over 15% of those days, the base maximum is €7,500; crew multipliers are 1, 1.5 or 2 for one, two or three crew members.
