Story details

The US Department of Energy on October 10 authorized an emergency exchange of up to 4 million barrels of crude from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve in response to weather-related supply disruptions in the Gulf region. The department said the exchange is intended to help sustain refinery operations and fuel supplies.

Up to 2 million barrels were authorized for each of ExxonMobil and BP America. DOE said the companies will return the crude in 2027 with additional premium barrels; ExxonMobil’s exchange accelerates delivery of SPR crude previously awarded to it. The release does not state that the full authorized volume has already been withdrawn.
