UNICEF restores emergency aid to isolated communities in South Sudan’s Jonglei
UNICEF and partners said they had delivered assistance to Wiechjol in Akobo County and Waat in Nyirol County, Jonglei State, after months without humanitarian support. The agency said conflict, displacement and unsafe routes had disrupted health, water, protection and nutrition services since January 2026.
Under the Rapid Response Mechanism, more than eight tonnes of supplies were delivered. UNICEF said 1,666 children under five were screened for acute malnutrition; 146 children with severe acute malnutrition were admitted for treatment, while 602 moderate cases were referred for follow-up care.
The release said 1,241 people, including 250 children under five, received primary health services. Water filters and purification supplies reached 1,200 households; 200 women and girls received hygiene kits, and more than 2,000 people received hygiene messaging. UNICEF cited SMART survey results showing global acute malnutrition above 40% in Akobo West; this is not a rate for all of Jonglei.
More than 40 million children in eight Eastern and Southern African countries are expected to face unusually wet or dry conditions between October and December 2026 linked to El Niño, UNICEF said in an analysis released on 1 September. The agency said the outlook raises the risk of floods and drought.

Measurement and privacy details
Google Analytics measurement starts only if you allow it. After consent, automatic measurement may cover scrolls, outbound link clicks, downloads, video engagement, site searches and basic form interactions; search terms may be detected from URL parameters. This site’s own code does not send form field values; email redaction in automatic measurement is best-effort, not guaranteed. Our manual page-view event uses a cleaned URL. You can change your choice later. Visits that begin with consent may also send numeric LCP, INP and CLS performance measurements after Analytics loads. A first or later grant starts this on the next page load; withdrawing consent stops these performance reports for this page. The preference cookie lasts six months; advertising measurement and personalization stay off.
