Sicily’s regional government and Eni’s EniMed unit signed a €2 million compensation agreement for fishers in Licata on 20 October. The region said the payment addresses temporary navigation and fishing restrictions in a safety zone that will be established during some phases of work on the Gemini project in the Sicilian Channel.

The support is intended for fishers whose home port is Licata, who are registered in the relevant maritime registers and whose activity is affected by the restrictions. EniMed said Gemini is linked to development of the Argo-Cassiopea gas fields; the region said the €2 million would be paid in a single amount for Licata’s fishing fleet alone.
