Story details

Saudi Engines Manufacturing Company, known as Makeen, signed a partnership with Kongsberg Maritime on 22 October for local production of waterjet propulsion systems, Saudi Press Agency reported from Dammam. The agreement is directed at developing marine manufacturing capabilities in Saudi Arabia.

According to the announcement, the partnership is intended to combine international technology with local capabilities, transfer knowledge and develop national skills. Makeen’s chairman, Suleiman Al-Babtain, linked the agreement to the company’s approach to building capacity in a sector identified for industrial growth.

The announcement describes a production partnership and the capabilities it is meant to establish. It does not give a contract value, a planned manufacturing volume, a delivery schedule or a date for commercial production. Signing the agreement therefore should not be read as evidence that the systems are already being manufactured locally.

The immediate development is the formal partnership. Its industrial effect will depend on implementation, including the transfer of production processes and skills; the published release does not provide milestones against which those stages can yet be measured.
