Story details
Rostec said in a September 1 release that Shvabe had developed an optical lens and prototype for receiving signals within an ultraviolet communications channel. The lens collects scattered UV light onto a photodetector, while a special filter is designed to suppress background noise. The company reports a high useful-signal level in the prototype; the announcement does not describe a deployed, complete wireless network.
Intended applications include industrial facilities with strong electromagnetic interference. Rostec says UV scattering could enable communication without a direct line of sight. Airport data transfer and detection of power-line or high-voltage equipment defects by sensing weak UV emissions from electrical discharges are also described as potential uses. The release provides no field-deployment date or independent performance measurements.
