Story details

Russia’s current-account surplus rose to $16.9 billion in the second quarter of 2026 from $13.2 billion in the first, according to balance-of-payments data published by the Bank of Russia on 30 September. The goods-trade surplus increased from $27.1 billion to $39.4 billion. Goods exports were $125.7 billion and imports $86.3 billion. The central bank said exports rose by $24.8 billion, mainly because of higher world prices, driving the wider trade surplus.

The services deficit widened by $4.3 billion to $13.1 billion. The Bank linked this to seasonal growth in Russians’ foreign-travel spending and higher transport and other services received from non-residents. The financial-account surplus narrowed to $8.3 billion from $12.5 billion in Q1. A separate stock measure, external debt, stood at $309.0 billion on 30 June, up $10.7 billion during the quarter and equal to 11% of GDP over the previous 12 months.
