Story details
The Angarsk Electrolysis Chemical Plant, part of Rosatom’s fuel division, has fully cleared accumulated process waste from a storage point at its uranium sublimation production site. A report published October 6 by Rosatom industry outlet Strana Rosatom said the work is part of a federal programme to decommission nuclear legacy facilities.
Preparation for decommissioning began in 2021, and the retrieved waste was conditioned into a safer form for subsequent disposal. The company plans to dismantle the cleared structures by the end of 2026, remove engineering infrastructure in 2027 and then rehabilitate the area. The report notes the site’s location in the atmospheric influence zone of the Baikal natural territory as a reason the work is relevant to reducing environmental risks and preparing the land for safe future use.
