Story details

Business financial data released by Stats NZ on 8 September put sales across the covered industries at NZ$214 billion in the June 2026 quarter, up NZ$17 billion or 8.9% from a year earlier. Purchases rose 10% to NZ$151 billion. Salaries and wages reached NZ$33 billion, an annual increase of 3.7%. Operating profit totalled NZ$29 billion, up NZ$2.1 billion or 7.9%. The series combines survey, tax and other administrative data for most market industries; it is not a census that individually surveys every business.

Seasonally adjusted sales increased in 13 of 14 main industries compared with the March quarter. The largest rises were NZ$2.7 billion in wholesale trade, NZ$1.3 billion in electricity, gas, water and waste services, and NZ$1.1 billion in manufacturing. These sales values are not adjusted for price changes. Annual sales growth did not translate into equal profit growth: purchases increased faster than sales. The figures differ across industries and measures. They help track business revenue, costs and profit flows, but are not the same as GDP growth or a profitability rate for each individual company.
