Story details
Russian natural-gas producer NOVATEK said on 18 September that it had launched a greenhouse-gas monitoring station in the Nadym District of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area. The company said the station is within a licence area operated by its subsidiary NOVATEK-Yurkharovneftegas and is the northernmost point in Russia’s national carbon-measurement supersites network. The project is being carried out with the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, the Arctic Research Center and the University of Tyumen.
According to NOVATEK, the station in the southern tundra will complement the Seven Larches carbon supersite in the region’s forest tundra. Its measurement equipment and temperature well are intended to support research on permafrost and the carbon-sink potential of tundra ecosystems. The company disclosed no measured emissions, carbon-removal result or numeric capacity; the announcement concerns research and monitoring infrastructure rather than production capacity.
