Story details
Statistics Norway (SSB) released August data for its industrial production index on 7 October. The index monitors value-added developments in oil and gas extraction, manufacturing, mining and electricity supply. The aggregate series increased 1% in the seasonally adjusted monthly comparison. The seasonally adjusted three-month comparison showed a 2.3% rise for June–August against March–May, while the calendar-adjusted annual change was minus 0.6%. Because these rates use different adjustment methods and comparison windows, they should not be read as the same signal.
SSB describes the index as a way to monitor value added through indicators such as physical output and hours worked. It is therefore not a direct measure of sales revenue, export revenue or industrial company profits. It summarizes movements in production volume in August; it does not provide a separate measure of company balance sheets, capacity utilization or future order expectations. This report conveys SSB’s index changes and does not present them as monetary production totals.
The main groups did not all move in the same direction. Production in extraction and related services rose 1.6% month on month in August and 2.7% in the June–August period compared with March–May; its calendar-adjusted annual change was minus 0.5%. Mining and quarrying rose 16.7% in the month but declined 2.1% in the three-month comparison, with an annual change of minus 0.4%. The contrast illustrates that sector groups make distinct contributions to the aggregate index.
Manufacturing output fell 0.4% in August from July. It was also down 0.4% in the three-month comparison, while its calendar-adjusted annual change was positive 0.4%. Food, beverages and tobacco declined 1.2% monthly and 1.1% annually; basic metals increased 4.0% monthly and 4.1% annually. Machinery and equipment fell 2.8% in the month and 0.5% over the year. Ships, boats and oil platforms fell 9.0% monthly but rose 3.7% in the three-month comparison.
The production index for electricity, gas and steam supply decreased 0.7% in August. Its three-month change was positive 6.8%, while the annual change was minus 8.0%. Index weights help indicate the relative scope of the components: extraction and related services represented 74.6% of the total weight, manufacturing 18.6%, and electricity, gas and steam 6.4%. The weights are updated annually. A sharp monthly movement in one smaller group therefore does not move the total index by the same percentage.
SSB publishes the index monthly, alongside the 2021=100 reference series. The seasonally adjusted monthly change, calendar-adjusted annual change and three-month comparison answer different analytical questions. The series covers Norway at national level and does not provide a regional breakdown. The next update was scheduled for 6 November 2026. These data show observed movements in production volume; without later revisions, order data and revenue series, they do not amount to a forecast of future production or industrial activity.
