Nigeria’s House of Representatives called for federal intervention against gully erosion in Anambra State on 22 October, according to the National Assembly Library Trust Fund. The resolution concerns communities in Nnewi North, Nnewi South and Ekwusigo, including Ibolo Oraifite.

Presenting the motion, Peter Ifeanyi Uzokwe said the advancing gully had damaged homes, farmland and local roads and was approximately 150 metres from the Onitsha–Owerri Dual Carriageway. Those damage and distance descriptions are the lawmaker’s account, rather than measurements independently verified by Haber Paper.

The House called for a technical evaluation, provision for sustainable erosion-control works in 2027 budget estimates and a review and completion of a project originally awarded in 2014. It also sought emergency assistance through the National Emergency Management Agency and a joint parliamentary oversight visit, with a report requested within four weeks.

The resolution matters for trade and access to services because it addresses both local transport links and a federal highway. However, the announcement is a request for action: it does not show that a new appropriation has passed, a construction contract has been funded or relief has reached residents. No project cost or independently assessed total loss is provided.
