EU grants Italy five-year gas-capacity derogation at Mazara and Gela
The European Commission approved a five-year exception to capacity-allocation rules at two Italian gas entry points, following a request by regulator ARERA. It applies from 5 August 2026.
Italy’s energy regulator ARERA said on 21 October that the European Commission had granted its request for a five-year derogation from specific European network-code rules on gas capacity allocation at the Mazara del Vallo and Gela entry points. Commission decision C(2026) 6821 takes effect from 5 August 2026.
The exception preserves a “first come, first served” mechanism for allocating residual capacity. ARERA said the approach reflects the operating characteristics of the Transmed and Greenstream pipelines and should help make use of available infrastructure while avoiding costlier short-term alternatives. The regulator linked the decision to supply security and procurement-cost stability, but did not quantify any expected price reduction.

Measurement and privacy details
Google Analytics measurement starts only if you allow it. After consent, automatic measurement may cover scrolls, outbound link clicks, downloads, video engagement, site searches and basic form interactions; search terms may be detected from URL parameters. This site’s own code does not send form field values; email redaction in automatic measurement is best-effort, not guaranteed. Our manual page-view event uses a cleaned URL. You can change your choice later. Visits that begin with consent may also send numeric LCP, INP and CLS performance measurements after Analytics loads. A first or later grant starts this on the next page load; withdrawing consent stops these performance reports for this page. The preference cookie lasts six months; advertising measurement and personalization stay off.
