Story details

The International Monetary Fund’s Executive Board concluded its 2026 review of program design and conditionality on September 14, examining lending programs during 2018–2024. The review found that IMF-supported programs responded to a more uncertain global environment and varied country needs, while continuing to focus on restoring external viability and safeguarding resources.

The Board also identified areas for improvement, including making program objectives and assumptions clearer, strengthening country ownership and improving the realism and sequencing of policy measures. The review calls for closer attention to implementation and for lessons from recent programs to inform future design. It is an institutional assessment of the IMF’s lending approach, not a new country financing agreement.
