Story details
Eurostat’s education data published on 5 October counted 5.30 million teachers in EU primary, lower secondary and upper secondary schools in 2024. That was 36,500 more than in 2023. Women made up 72.9% of the teaching workforce and men 27.1%.
The age profile showed that 40.4% of teachers were 50 or older, while 8.0% were under 30. The share aged 50 and over was highest in Lithuania at 58.4%, Portugal at 55.6% and Italy at 54.3%. The figures cover education levels classified as ISCED 1–3; they should not be read as a count of every teaching job or of staff in education outside schools.
