Story details

Ethiopia’s State Minister of Industry Hassan Muhammed told the Ethiopian News Agency on 3 October that total industrial capacity utilization had risen to 69.2%. He said the Ethiopia Tamrt (Made in Ethiopia) movement and the National Manufacturing Industry Council were addressing constraints in electricity, water, capital and raw materials, including at factories that had previously shut down.

Muhammed also said domestic import substitution saved nearly US$5.9 billion in foreign exchange in the past fiscal year, with local production expanding in textiles and apparel, food and beverages, metallurgy and leather. He cited long-term government goals of US$9 billion in industrial export revenue, five million sector jobs and a 17.2% manufacturing share of GDP under the 10-Year Perspective Development Plan. The ENA interview did not state the capacity-use calculation method, baseline or independent verification; the targets are plans, not results already achieved.
