Ethiopia recorded digital financial transactions valued at 33 trillion birr during the 2025/26 fiscal year, according to Gemechis Dugasa, the National Bank of Ethiopia’s director for regulation, licensing and approval. The Ethiopian News Agency reported his remarks on 1 October from the Ethiopia Finance Forum 2026.

Dugasa attributed the expansion particularly to mobile money and digital banking, alongside mobile banking, digital payments and agent-based services. He said the growth creates new delivery models but requires cybersecurity, data protection, reliable infrastructure and stronger operational governance. The reported 33 trillion birr is transaction value, not a measure of GDP, household wealth or new credit; the report does not provide transaction counts, service-by-service breakdowns or a comparison with the prior fiscal year.
