Statistics Canada said the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 3.0% from a year earlier in August, unchanged from July. It fell 0.1% month over month; on a seasonally adjusted monthly basis it rose 0.2%. Slower annual growth in gasoline prices put downward pressure on the all-items index.

The CPI excluding gasoline rose 2.4% year over year, after 2.2% in July. Travel-tour prices were up 26.1% and rent 2.8%; rent inflation accelerated from 2.5% in July. The agency cited a base effect and fuel surcharges in the travel-tour comparison.
