Story details
Researchers at the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco and the Federal University of Pernambuco in Brazil numerically studied how transport in disordered graphene conductors changes with a tunable parameter. In an October 9 arXiv preprint, which has not undergone peer review, they calculated conductance in graphene ribbons containing electrostatic quantum dots with power-law-distributed radii, using a tight-binding model and the Kwant software. The team compared 101 conductance spectra for the same disorder sample at different gate potentials.
As the number of propagating channels increased, the authors found that distributions of conductance-fluctuation correlations shifted from narrow profiles around zero to broad or bimodal structures, then narrowed again over some channel ranges. Their single-sample analysis interprets this pattern as parameter-sensitive reorganization of quantum transport pathways, not a thermodynamic glass phase. They also calculated similar correlation patterns in a non-graphene two-dimensional electron-gas model. These are numerical material and transport results, not experimental measurements of a device or chip. The first page lists both institutions in Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil.
