Story details

Steel Dynamics’ results published on 19 October showed record steel shipments of 3.8 million tons in the third quarter. The release does not specify a conversion from its reported tons unit to metric tonnes. Net sales were $6.5 billion and net income was $756 million. Operating income from steel operations rose 43% from the second quarter to $1.0 billion, which the company attributed to record shipments and wider metal spreads.

All three cold mills at the aluminum facility were operational, and the first of two continuous annealing and solution heat lines was running. Ongoing start-up costs left aluminum operations with a $26 million operating loss for the quarter, while the platform was EBITDA breakeven. Separately, the company reported aluminum sheet shipments of 55,000 metric tonnes and hot-band production of 91,000 metric tonnes.
