Story details
New Zealand’s gross domestic product rose 0.2% in the June 2026 quarter from the March quarter, according to national accounts released by Stats NZ on 17 September. Growth had been 0.9% in March. On Stats NZ’s preferred average-annual basis, GDP was 1.7% higher in the year ended June 2026 than in the year ended June 2025; this compares the sums of four quarters in each year, not the two June quarters alone. Quarterly GDP is the official volume measure of economic activity, with price changes removed.
Construction rose 2.7% in the quarter, while transport, postal and warehousing fell 1.7% and retail trade and accommodation fell 1.0%. Stats NZ says the headline GDP measure is directly seasonally adjusted; movements are in seasonally adjusted chain-volume terms unless stated otherwise. GDP measures domestic production, while real gross national disposable income fell 0.4% in the quarter, reflecting purchasing power and other income flows.
