Story details
By the end of June, 7,743,839 of Nigeria’s 12,589,486 active registered electricity customers had meters, a coverage rate of 61.51%, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission said in its second-quarter report published on 29 September. The commission recorded 350,270 meter installations from April through June. That was 17.97% fewer than the revised first-quarter total of 426,985 installations. The figures cover customer and distributor submissions across the 11 distribution companies included in the report.
The largest share of installations, 205,486 meters or 58.67% of the quarterly total, came under the Distribution Sector Recovery Program. The Meter Asset Provider framework accounted for 123,833 meters, the Meter Acquisition Fund for 13,028, distributor financing for 7,643 and vendor financing for 280. Coverage varied widely by distributor: Eko stood at 88.70% and Abuja at 81.38%, while Jos recorded 35.42% and Yola 36.20%. The report measures active registered grid customers; it should not be read as a metering rate for Nigeria’s entire population or every electricity user.
