Ethiopian Electric Power chief executive Ashebir Balcha told the Ethiopian News Agency on 14 September that the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam accounted for 52% of the country’s electricity export revenue. The utility said total power export earnings exceeded $500 million.

Balcha said Ethiopia supplied electricity to Kenya, Djibouti, Sudan and, more recently, Tanzania. He also put domestic electricity revenue above 124 billion birr and said the dam had improved the utility’s financial position in the completed fiscal year. These are figures attributed to the company chief; the report does not provide a comparative time series.
