Story details

In a 11 September release, UNICEF said the DRC government is conducting its second General Population and Housing Census through national bodies including the National Institute of Statistics and the Central Census Bureau, with technical support from UNFPA and partnership support from UNICEF. The country has not held a general population census since 1984. Census mapping is under way, and training for mapping operators began on 9 September.

The release said that as of March 2026 about 83% of the estimated $192 million budget had been secured, including $30 million from the government. The largely digital operation is planned to use about 150,000 tablets and ultimately more than 100,000 enumerators. These figures describe planned scale, not completed device distribution or a finished field count. The release contains no population results.
