Story details

Canada and Ontario announced C$8.7 billion in investments and new measures on 21 October to support strategic industries, including steel, automotive manufacturing and critical minerals. Under a joint steel fund, the federal government committed C$3.55 billion over five years and Ontario committed C$1.67 billion. The stated goals include diversifying production, reaching overseas markets and securing steel supply for domestic supply chains.

The package also includes up to C$2.5 billion in public support over two years for large automotive capital projects and a federal commitment of up to C$1 billion over three years for road infrastructure serving the Ring of Fire critical-minerals region in Northern Ontario. The governments plan a coordinated permitting process and a joint working group on consultation with First Nations. These are announced funding commitments, not completed projects or confirmed expenditures.
