Story details
Statistics Canada said the seasonally adjusted current-dollar value of Canadian building permits fell C$2.6 billion, or 17.3%, to C$12.2 billion in July. This reversed June’s C$2.3 billion increase. In constant dollars, the total declined 17.5% monthly and 2.2% from July 2025.
Non-residential permit values fell C$1.9 billion to C$5.0 billion, largely due to institutional projects. Residential permits decreased C$701.2 million to C$7.2 billion, with multi-unit housing accounting for most of the decline. Permits indicate intended construction, not completed buildings or realized spending.
