Story details
The Australian Bureau of Statistics’ June-quarter 2026 government finance release, published on September 1, showed general government total revenue rising 8.7% from the previous quarter to A$288.7 billion. Taxation revenue increased 9.3% to A$241.3 billion. Total general government expenses also rose, by 10.2% to A$291.5 billion; together, the movements shifted the net operating balance from a A$831 million surplus in March to a A$2.8 billion deficit in June. These revenue and expense figures are at current prices in original, not seasonally adjusted series.
General government net borrowing was A$23.6 billion for the quarter. Government Finance Statistics measure revenue, expenses and financing activity across public-sector entities; they are not interchangeable with a consolidated budget announcement or the federal government’s cash result alone. The ABS said public demand was expected to contribute 0.1 percentage points to quarterly GDP growth. The figures describe the completed quarter and are not a forecast of future budgets.
