That was 0.1 percentage points above the provisional 1.7% estimate. Other buildings and structures made the largest contribution to the rise, while a fall in transport assets partly offset it. Gross fixed capital formation (GFCF) across the whole economy includes both business and public-sector investment. It increased 0.9% in the second quarter, revised down from a provisional 1.2% rise, and was 3.1% above its level a year earlier. In the ONS comparison of G7 economies, UK whole-economy investment equalled 19.0% of GDP in the quarter, the lowest share among the countries shown. The comparison uses current-price data; figures for other countries came from the latest OECD data available on 22 September and may later be revised. Country estimates therefore need not refer to exactly the same data vintage. The revised series was published consistently with the 2026 Blue Book national accounts, and the ONS updated business-investment history back to 1997. Its accounts distinguish chained-volume measures from current-price values: real growth removes price effects to track changes in the amount of assets acquired. Quarterly estimates can change as survey returns arrive and the annual balancing work on the national accounts advances. This release is an official estimate of business investment and broader GFCF in a particular quarter; by itself it does not establish companies’ future investment plans, the productivity effect or whether economic growth will continue."],"key_points":[],"sections":[]},"text":"The ONS revised estimate showed buildings and structures as the largest contributor; whole-economy investment rose 0.9% in the quarter.\n\nThe UK Office for National Statistics (ONS) said in a revised estimate published on 30 September that business investment increased 1.8% in the second quarter of 2026 from the previous quarter.
