This is the number of eggs produced in the month; it is not a measure of sales, household consumption, stocks or availability on shop shelves. The number of laying hens fell 3.2% over the same period to 14,789,033. Production and hen numbers are separate indicators, and these two movements alone do not explain productivity or establish cause and effect. The comparison is August 2026 against August 2025; a month-on-month change is a different comparison.","By shell colour, white egg output slipped 0.1%, from 259,218,117 to 259,058,255, a decline of 159,862 eggs. Coloured egg output increased 4.1%, from 107,238,691 to 111,670,736, an absolute gain of 4,432,045. The two groups moved in different directions and by different amounts, but the increase in coloured eggs exceeded the decrease in white eggs, leaving total output 4,272,183 units higher. A percentage change and a unit difference are not interchangeable: one describes proportional movement against the prior-year category and the other the absolute change in its count. INE’s colour classification is linked to the genetic line of the laying hens associated with the shell colour.","In the weight tables, INE defines extra-large eggs as 61–68 grams and large eggs as 54–61 grams. White extra-large production fell 2.4% year over year to 80,220,942 units, while large white eggs declined 1.5% to 77,427,091. For coloured eggs, the same classes rose 3.8% to 36,324,942 and 1.2% to 37,809,409, respectively. These figures count eggs; they are not total weights in grams. The official workbook also tracks special or super-large eggs above 68 grams, medium eggs from 47–54 grams, small eggs from 40–47 grams, very small eggs below 40 grams and eggs not classified by weight.
